Japan MIC Introduces Technical Requirements for WPT System in 6.7 MHz Band
2026-03-16
Blog

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) in Japan recently introduced a Partial Amendment of the Ordinances for Enforcement of the Radio Act. This amendment is set to establish technical standards for capacitive coupling Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) systems operating in the 6.7 MHz frequency band. Targeted for implementation in December 2024, this change could significantly impact Japan's wireless charging technology landscape.

Capacitive coupling WPT is a method that uses electric fields to transfer power between devices without direct contact, providing a convenient alternative to traditional charging methods. The 6.7 MHz frequency band was selected due to its efficient power transfer properties and minimal interference with other communications systems. By setting standards specific to this frequency band, Japan aims to enhance device compatibility and ensure safe and reliable wireless power transfer across different industries.

One of the driving factors behind this amendment is the growing demand for wireless power solutions across sectors such as automotive, consumer electronics, and industrial IoT. From electric vehicle (EV) charging stations to wearable devices and industrial machinery, capacitive coupling WPT systems offer the advantage of streamlined power delivery, paving the way for more flexible and seamless user experiences. The proposed standards are expected to provide clear guidelines for manufacturers and developers, fostering innovation while ensuring compliance with the country's stringent safety and communication regulations.

With the amendment scheduled for December 2024, Japan is positioning itself as a leader in WPT technology, aiming to foster a more robust ecosystem for wireless charging solutions. This proactive regulatory approach may not only boost domestic advancements but also set a precedent for international standards, as other countries explore similar initiatives in the evolving WPT landscape.

Contact UM today to learn more about how we can help you navigate these regulatory changes and stay compliant with WPT System in 6.7 MHz Band.
